Marching Band Formal Uniform Policy

The uniform of the band is a symbol of the discipline and dedication of its members. To maintain this reputation, there are certain rules for wearing the uniform properly. These rules are meant to promote pride and respect in those privileged to wear it. For any questions please contact crosbee.lisser@boardmanschools.org.

Performance - Full Uniform

The marching band uniform will be kept at school. Students arrive at school early to get dressed in their uniform. Students must have on under clothes they wear under the uniform that are appropriate to wear once the uniform is taken off. This consists of shorts or pants/leggings and the band shirt to wear underneath.

Full uniform consists of:

● Official BSMB T-shirt

● Uniform Pants

● Uniform Jacket/Cape

● Black Calf-length socks

● Black Dinkles

● White Busby hat and Hat Bucket

● White gloves

Section leaders will be inspecting the uniform for all parts every performance, and will be reporting to the band directors to check that everyone passed inspection.

Uniform Hair

These hair guidelines are regardless of gender, based on hair length:

● If hair is lower than the ears, it will need to be tied/pinned back so as to not be hanging out of the hat.
● If hair is touching shoulders or longer, it will need to be secured in a bun, ponytail, or braids, and flipped up into the hat. Hair should be secured so that when removing and putting on hat, it stays in place.

● No hair should be touching ears, it needs to be gelled or bobby pinned back so when the hat is on, it cannot be seen.

These hair guidelines are to ensure that every member looks uniform, there is no hair in anyone's sight or face when marching in any weather condition.

We recommend students practice before the first performance with hair ties, clips, and bobby pins.

There will also be a limited amount of extras with the uniform moms.

General Uniform Behavior Guidelines

● Everyone wears hats, or everyone does not. Directors tell you when to take hats off, when they come off, they go directly in the hat bucket

● Hat bucket logos face out when in the stands

● No Running in uniform

● No sitting on ground in uniform

● No one walks around alone in uniform

● Represent the band well in uniform: No cursing, rough housing, or breaking school rules

Care for Your Marching Band Hat

Your marching band hat is part of your uniform and should be kept clean and in good condition throughout the season. It is your responsibility to care for your hat, including cleaning dirt, sweat, makeup, or any other spots that may appear.

To clean your hat:

  • Use a clean microfiber cloth with a small amount of mild detergent, such as Woolite, diluted with water.
  • Gently wipe the affected areas. Avoid soaking the hat or using excessive water.
  • For dirt, sweat marks, or other stains, spot treat the area as soon as possible rather than allowing the stain to set.
  • Use a second clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth to remove any remaining detergent.
  • Pat the hat with a dry microfiber towel to remove excess moisture.
  • Leave the hat out to air dry completely.

IMPORTANT: Do not place your hat back into your hat bucket while it is damp. Trapping moisture inside the bucket can cause odors, staining, mildew, and damage to the hat.

Before returning your hat to its bucket, make sure it is 100% clean and completely dry.

A clean uniform includes a clean hat. Please check yours regularly throughout marching band season rather than waiting until there is a noticeable buildup of dirt or sweat.

If you have any question, please see one of the uniform moms, or email uniforms@boardmanband.org
